FEATURE FRIDAY: PAPER FOR YOUR WALLS

Wallpaper has been something that has been one of those trends that has seen popular periods and then not so popular periods. Over the last couple of years wallpaper of all kinds has really made a come back and has become more popular than ever, with SO many different applications and options available to make your space and walls unique, look and feel incredible. I first started using wallpaper in interiors over two years ago now when it was brought to my attention that painted walls are sometimes really dull and don't add much depth to a space or room. Wallpaper was the instant solution and I went exploring not knowing that I would actually uncover such a popular trend and SO MANY options! There are paintables, removable wallpaper and now something that is becoming very popular is custom murals, which allows you to create a scene in your space that no one else may have.

I really love wallpaper and the textural element it can bring to a surface, which is important to think about when designing interiors. There are so many surfaces in a space to think about and ones that will always have a certain texture to them because of the different materials used but a wall is generally always just painted, so having the ability to add a paper that has a pattern to create depth or a texture to make it more tactile and visually interesting is a great idea. It also allows you to create a different mood, atmosphere or feature which is always really important to think about when designing a space. Wallpaper shouldn't just be restricted to residential design it should and is applied anywhere and in interesting ways. It can also be used to create interesting artworks, murals and can be utilised in hospitality and corporate design to make the space different.

GUEST POSTING FOR THE INTERIORS ADDICT

The lovely Jen gave me the opportunity to Guest Post on Interior's Addict whilst she is away on her honeymoon. Those who follow her and her fabulous blog will know that it was a very big and exciting weekend for her and I am sure just like I was, many of you were checking instagram every so often on Saturday to see any pictures. Whilst Jen is honeymooning around different parts of the world she has a trusty mix of guest posters and a blog sitter who is making sure it is still running and the content is great. There have been already some great guest posts that I am loving and I feel very privledged to be amougst the writers chosen.

Here is a little back story: One of the destinations Jen is off to is the UK, so I wanted to focus on some great talent from Europe and talk about the inspiration that one can get from travelling and exploring different countries. London in particular is very well known for it's markets where you can find many treasures for your home, it is also produces many fabulous designers including Claire Coles, who makes amazing wallpaper. I wanted to showcase her fabulous designs but also capture and inspire the art of being able to find treasures around the globe to fill your interiors.

THE ENCHANTED FLORENCE

To celebrate the beginning of Spring and the 28th annual flower show, David Jones Elizabeth St Sydney is turning it's down stairs windows into a wonderland of texture, textiles, colour and glamour to celebrate Florence Broadhurst. Florence Broadhurst was a fantastic designer who started her very successful wallpaper business in the 1950s amongst a lot of other things, that produced beautiful screen printed designs. She revived the trend and gave it the glamour and style that wallpaper required during that time period and became very much renowned for her beautiful and elegant signature prints.

Signature Prints is the name of the company which has successfully maintain Florence Broadhurst's legacy and continues to produce her unique designs, which are ever so popular they have even expanded into linen, fabrics and homewares. It is going to be a very unique and exciting event held by David Jones over the next two weeks ( Starting on September 5th ) to honour their working and design relationship with Florence, as well as showcasing her amazing design skills to bring their window display's to life.

If you are in Sydney during this time, you should head down to the Elizabeth St store and just admire the beauty that is her designs, some are so simple but yet so effective and timeless. 'The Enchanted Florence' display is going to be something everyone should see as I really love little events such as this because it really enriches and also makes many people aware of a beautiful product that they can actually utilise in their homes. Florence's designs are so culturally significant in the design realm especially for Sydney as she was an Australian woman that achieved so much in a time where woman were not really seen as successful business owners, yet her legacy and prints are so popular even in our 21st Century.

WALLPAPER COLOUR

I am a big fan of wallpaper especially to help create a great accent in any space, commercial, residential or retail, because the thing is, sometimes a painted wall is really just that, a colour applied to Gyprock. So, obviously depending on the brief given it can really add little bit of an edge or texture to what is usually just a normally painted surface. I prefer usually a wallpaper that has some kind of texture applied to it because as much as it is there just to create visual interest, often accents with bold patterns always give people the urge to want to touch or interact with it. Or maybe it is just me or like minded creatives... ? Anyway, I am sure most of my lovely readers will already be aware of the awesome paint supplier that is Porters Paints. Not only do they supply paint but they have a very lovely wallpaper selection, which I really love and in particular the Designer collaborations. The collaborations are not new as they were launched way back last year around the time Design Ex was in town and I remember their stall being one of the busiest as everyone was trying to get access to the new wallpaper samples.

At this stage I have not really come across many other simple wallpaper's that I love more than the Porters designer collaborations and my favourite in particular is Anna Spiro's designs. They are simple, bold and unique, to put it in three simple words. They to me challenge very simple traditional notions of patterns but in a very modern and fresh approach and same goes for the Greg Natale range. What I also really love about them is that they are bold and mainly bright in colour selection which I think is perfect for spring and those wanting a very vibrant space.

Round and Round the garden, is my favourite! I love the simplistic pattern and the stylised nature of the circle and Mediterranean feel, I think it has.

Call me 'Negative Nancy' or a designer with high expectations because I was really disappointed with last nights room reveal. You all know I am a Blockaholic but seriously, the styling and the teams were poor this week and not just in their pockets. The only places any of the teams ticked boxes for me were in their storage thinking and execution and their powder rooms.

My favourite part of last nights rooms reveals was Johnno & Trixxie's wallpaper. I really thought it was beautiful. It has a really organic feel to it.

You can find the wallpaper here on the great website that is The Assembly Hall. Their retail store is filled and filled with unique and great finds.

The wallpaper is hand printed and has great detailing that is to be admired. The colours are vibrant but not over the top. I think this was a great choice by Johnno & Trixxie!
