CLEAR YOUR SPACE + CLEAR YOUR MIND

Have you ever heard someone say, your space is a direct reflection of your mind? When your mind is cluttered with so much stuff, things to remember, scattered, things tend to be everywhere? Have you noticed? If you have not noticed, then I invite you to take a moment and really observe be present a look around yourself.

Is there a lot of stuff everywhere? Can you never keep anything neat? 

I thought so, we all do it and it is my mission to help you become really mindful of your space, both inside and out. They correlate believe it or not and it is a mirror of your internal mind. It happens to me all the time, things start off really clean and tidy and then... BOOM, the tidal wave that is my mind trying to keep up with everything happening is lost in a state of samples, paperwork, computer gadgets I hate, mail, bills, things to remember to pay, pens, paints, and butter paper.

I do have specific goals this year but mostly I have specific words that I want to work towards being. One of them is flowing and I mean it in every sense of the word as I tend to be a little of a control freak from time to time, it pops up and makes my life and work a lot harder. So with letting go of the sense of perfection I introduce the idea of flow into my life, I want a good flow especially when it comes to my work space and mind. 

The thing is, how do we get there when everything seems to be taking over and you almost feel like you're drowning below it all?

+ Firstly, begin to mindful, take a step back and observe it all for what it is. Whatever room it may be, even if it is your mind. Just stop. 

+ Make categories for your mess. 

" THINGS TO KEEP" " IMPORTANT" " BILLS" and begin sorting. If you have not looked at that article you were ment to read since last December, bin it, it's gone. Be ruthless, you will not believe how liberating it will be.

+ When trying to get rid of things, think about and ask yourself these questions: 

 "DOES THIS HAVE PURPOSE?" " "DOES THIS SERVE ME OR HELP ME?"  " WILL I NEED IT IN A YEAR? " You will know the answer and then just BIN IT! But remember always be sustainable, so make sure all paper and recyclables go straight into the recycling.

+ Have task areas in your work area. This tip applies only to your study and work area, however we can think about it in terms of other spaces too. Areas of your home are dedicated to specific tasks and functions so really try not to mix the zones. It makes the mind and activity a lot more clearer and defined.

+ Do this at least every two months to stay on top of things. You can do it!

MEET THE DESIGN TWINS

Have you heard or discovered the latest amazing set of homewares yet? You all know how much I love concrete so it is really no surprise when I say how much I love the designs by this dynmaic duo, Crystal and Mitch, better known as The Design Twins.

Last month Crystal took the time to chat to us about all things design and business, what inspires them and what they believe is the key to success. I want to take this opportunity to thank The Design Twins for taking part in this feature to share with all my amazing readers, I have not been able to publish this until I got back on Australian land so now that I am back, it is the first feature of many more to come.

I know music has been a huge part of your life, how do you think it has helped you channel your creativity into what you are doing at the moment? 

Music gave me the strength and persistence to pursue what we are doing now with Design Twins. Our products are definitely influenced by music and fashion, allowing us to create unique and bold pieces. 

You create some really unique and interesting pieces. What is your creative process? 

With our designs, we always think of the craziest idea possible, to the point of where it can't be made and then bring it right back to a products that is practical, logical and beautiful. For instance, with our concrete pillows, we thought of large outdoor pillows. These would be heavy and not practical, so we created mini pillows for candles, keys and jewellery! 

We have noticed you use concrete, what gave you the idea to use it? And is there another material both you and “Twinnie” would love to introduce? 

We started off with a bag of concrete in our kitchen sink and the craziness went from there! We realised it could be shaped into ANYTHING and we wanted to take it from being a DIY project to the next level of crazy homewares. We would LOVE to introduce copper or steel into the designs somehow. We love all things marble, copper, leather, glass and recycled timber!!

What would be the best three words to describe what The Design Twins is all about? 

CRAZY, UNIQUE, FUN!

What do The Design Twins believe is the key ingredient in working to make your dreams come true? 

Love what your doing and keep persisting even when everything seems impossible. There have been so many times when we wanted to give up, but we just knew that if pushed through, something unique was going to be created.

What would you consider would be the most important step you took in making the business happen?

Moving out of our kitchen sink, to a workshop, where we could experiment with designs in a bigger and better scale.

What do you believe is the best part about having your own business and what would be your piece of advice for those wanting to follow their passions? 

We get to work the hours we choose, although lately its been from 10am until 1am most days, we hope to reduce that to some type of normality soon. We get to do fun things like snorkel on our lunch breaks, as we live on a reef! If you have a dream, don't give up on it! Stay curious. Stay creative. Stay hungry!

WHAT INSPIRATION IS ...

This blog post is dedicated to a true supportive friend, who was an inspiration to everyone she met. She is the brightest star in the universe. 

I spontaneously had to step away from blogging and work for the last part of July as I had a lot of things on my mind, which to be honest were taking up a lot more space in my head then anything to do with work. I honestly have been struggling to bring myself back to focusing on work a lot and if I was to tell you the amount of times I have actually sat in front of a full blog schedule but with no words, no desire or inspiration to write about anything that is happening you would be very surprised. It is not because I have lost passion for it or because I cannot be bothered. It is because this July has been full of life lessons that are far more important than any other kind of news and so more deeper than words can actually describe.

After hearing some pretty devastating and horrible news a few weeks back, I had a reel running through my head of last conversations, facial expressions, laughter, hugs and could not bring myself to think what I was hearing and then read through my phone was actually true. It was one of those flash things that you often hear people describe when they hear bad news or something horrible happens... where you think, really "your life flashes before your eyes?" Well, turns out, there is real meaning behind that saying, which has the most profound effect in brining you straight back into the present moment in an instant. After a few hours past, I could not sleep and got this really funny feeling where everything just seemed so surreal, because when someone passes who is in your circle, whatever part of the circle it may be and is on your wave length it has a profound and impacting effect, that I believe will never change.

I got to thinking about inspiration because even though her friendship was special to me, as all my friendships are, it became more apparent then ever. Over the last two years I have learnt so much more about what authentic and true friendship means. I am a relatively open and very giving person, who is transparent and I do not like bullshit so have learnt the art of quality controlling my friendships especially who I opened up to. She was a friend who I opened up to as did she, which I will always cherish as she was truly a pure example at living life to the fullest of your capabilities. I always knew this and I always appreciated her support so much, even her unwavering faith in me and my business, which to me meant so much. I know it was true as we shared the no bullshit policy, no pitty, no crap, just raw truth. It becomes so interesting how those moments are so much more precious once they are the only ones you have left because she no longer with us.

It is for these reasons and many more that she is truly without a doubt an inspiration and why everyone she encountered in her journey has called her inspirational. I know without a doubt, her humble and modest personality would not believe that I am writing this right now, as she would always say, "come on Jeanette " when I did tell her in person... but it is undoubtedly true. She showed many of us so much strength of character and what life is truly about... also to really NOT sweat the small stuff, life is just way too short.

Loss is a funny thing, and not in normal sense of the word, it is something that grounds you profoundly and quickly. It shakes up the little world around you just like when you turn a snow globe upside down. It allows the flakes to fall into completely different positions and configurations which ultimately change your outlook, perspective and path. It is for this reason that I have been saying that the world will never be the same again, for hundreds of us that were beyond privileged to have shared moments with her.

It also shows up very quickly who are the people you can count on for support and the unwavering strength that can come from those who truly love and want to be there for the ones closest to her, who are hurting so much more than anyone can imagine.

It is for this reason that I will never give up and carry that unwavering faith she had in me forever.

It is so important to love your life, not just on the outside but on the inside, build something that is true for you and do not waste time in going around and being unkind to others. There is no room for it, there is no room for fear, there is only room for love and appreciation.

Do not wait until tomorrow to do what it is you wanted to do today. Time is a very precious thing that too many of us take for granted.

HAPPY 1ST BIRTHDAY

I cannot believe that only a year ago the clicked publish on my Facebook page for my business, JDZ Designs. I published my business website as well as made it all live/public to everyone, which was I have to admit as one of the scariest moments in my professional career. All I could think was, far out, am I doing the right thing? Should I be doing this? What will people think?! Well, turns out it was definitely the right decision... no matter how many times I have questioned wether it was throughout the year... it has been the most rewarding and developing time for myself personally and as a business. It really is a journey, I know it sounds cliched, but it actually is, because I am not just doing this for a job, it is because I want a particular lifestyle at my finger tips, it is a dream and ambition as well a career. It is what I have always wanted, so I thought to myself, why should I NOT start now? What would 5 year Jeanette have on present Jeanette that would make it easier to start later in life... the answer was not much, some more experience, yeah sure, but it is not really anything that I don't really know already or can learn along the way for myself.

The truth is, it is not easy despite what some might think, growth and business success takes time, so for someone who is often not very patient and wants to see results straight away, it is scary. You have to hang in there and "Rome was not built in a day."

There are heaps of changes and different things I want to do/achieve, so I aim to make them all happen and come together. The essence of JDZ Designs is an Interior Design studio that specialises in Residential environments but has experience and worked in commercial interiors. We offer the whole thing, but also can do property styling/ evaluation, e-styling ( online styling ) and events.

We have the blog "Behind The Designer" where we share all that we love and inspires us in the design world, which we aim to update weekly.

We also now have a monthly Newsletter that shares lots of tips and tricks as well as all the news!

WARRIOR WEDNESDAY // STORY TELLER OR SEASONAL?

Two posts in one day?! What the hell is going on? ... Well I am inspired that is what is happening today and I have much to share so lets get right to it.

You all know already that I am a huge fan of Sarah Wilson and everything that she stands for so she has again inspired this post, because here at JDZ we really like being rule breakers and stepping away from the crowd. I am all about personality in your home because that is how you tell your story but I am also about keeping your home fresh and vibrant. The thing is I don't mean this in a way that suggests that you SHOULD go out and buy new furniture every month or to match your seasons, I mean that your key pieces and elements around your home should be that, key pieces, that are timeless and always there, but that doesn't mean that changing around your space buy adding in a new cushion that you fall in love with or a brighter colour candle in summer is 'wrong' if it appears on your coffee table... that is actually fine, or not, there really is no right or wrong... it is what works for you and what embodies your personality. If you want vibrance during summer, go get that sweet smelling candle, if you want to be warm in winter, invest in that super wooly bulky blanket that adds that texture to your key couch.

I want to find out from all of you wether you are a story teller in your home or you are more seasonal? Do you believe in having or finding elements that are talking points or different, has history and adds richness to your space?

The thing is, space plays a huge part in our lives especially our homes, it is where we live, it is where we develop a lifestyle, not to mention it impacts the way we feel and how others perceive us. This is why I believe personality and following the concept of creating a "healthy" space is by embodying you.

WARRIOR WEDNESDAYS // HAVE TO SHARE MY COLLECTIVE EXPERIENCE

This post is not going to have any images other than a very inspirational quote because there really isn't anything that I can say then... being yourself is the most effective and best tool that you own and many of us just don't trust that enough. Last night I attended my first ever reader event hosted by The Collective and it was the most refreshing and vibrant event I have been too ... in along while! Last issue I was fortunate enough to have a little feature in the "You're the Collective" part of the magazine and there are no other cliched words to say than ... it was a dream come true. To be recognised for what I do and for what I believe in is more than rewarding, it means that I am doing something right and last night at the event it was reaffirmed time and time again. No matter how hard it gets or how many times I fall off the track of climbing the business mountain, I will keep discovering and developing the major "Why" behind my passion and decision to have my own business.

You need to be yourself, in every aspect of your life, that is all we have, authenticity and love. That is where we build our dreams and hopes from... that is what is the most attractive thing anyone can have or offer. Everyone has support, but the most important support is the support you give yourself, so do it, support yourself, back your 200% even if you have no idea what you are doing... be honest and the rest falls into place. I don't really know how it does, but I just have faith it will. I may be a talented Interior Designer... but there is a whole lot more on offer than just that... and that is what I am working on because I really don't know everything but I am here to find out everything and anything I can and turn that into kick ass knowledge and edge.

WARRIOR WEDNESDAYS / DO AFFIRMATIONS WORK?

I was having a chat with one of my closest girlfriends recently and she was telling me how her positive thinking of something that she really wanted actually came true. Everyday she was thinking positively and affirming her thoughts through her actions of saying positive affirmations regarding the topic everyday. She was saying... it was like a miracle. Yes ok, cheesy whatever, but skeptics really need to realise that this concept and thought processes you have really do effect your life and outcomes. It is all about your perspective which then allows you to respond to situations and or your life in a better manner. We were saying, wow if we applied this type of thinking to EVERYTHING in our lives, how amazing would it be? Now this is different to posting on Facebook three times a day positive images and instagraming them over and over again, because sharing them on social media consistently isn't exactly what we are talking about and that is not how it is going to remind you to change your life. It is something that must be applied in every aspect of your day and it has to be something that you honestly believe it as belief her is the key.

I really feel, affirmations are something that is personal to everyone and something that should be adopted through a belief system, so then my question to you is, how to incorporate it into your personal life rather than your personal social media. ( Now that doesn't mean you can't share anything, because I do, but I only share things that I really do believe myself, believe in and try to practice ) This brings me to the popularity trend of turning simple affirmations into artworks, which allow you to have daily reminders in your home in an artistic and stylish way. This allows you to personally pick things and words that really mean something to you and by brining them into your space allows you to remind yourself personally of what inspires you.

INSPIRATION IS EVERYWHERE

Today has been a day that has been a bit all over the place, waiting forever this morning to try and get my mac book looked at because of course I am having a few technical issues... even though it is pretty much brand new. Sometimes you can't just cut a break with these things! Oh well, it meant I got a few hours to myself and could walk around looking at fashion which I definitely needed to catch up on. I had a lovely conversation with a girl this morning which has inspired this post today, so I wanted to share a little inspiration for all those who are struggling with the ever popular modern open planned space.

Open planning has a whole heap of benefits but at the same time you get left with a huge space that is meant to "house" several different purposes. What does one do? How do we go about making a space that has a kitchen, dining and living area work all in harmony? Well, it is all about zoning the space and utilising furniture pieces to create those zones so the space doesn't look empty as well as allowing you to create some sectioning off or partitions. A great way to also achieve this in a simply is also through the use of wall space, artwork and large mirrors work wonders in grounding a space as well as opening it up even more. Adding these elements assists to make the space look useful, complete and all the elements work together. It is also important to layer things and when I say layer, I mean you may have a book shelf, but think about different elements to showcase on it as well as adding a chair, which instantly becomes a reading area. I searched through Pinterest today to get some inspiring imagery to help get the creative juices flowing when it comes to thinking about how you can zone your open plan as well as giving certain areas purpose in smart and easy ways.

FLASH BLACK (FRIDAY) EVEN THOUGH IT'S MONDAY

I didn't get a chance to post all of my Friday posts, so today I will be posting them all along with our Monday Block in review post, which I know you all look forward to. What is great about posting them all today is that they actually all relate very well to one another as they are about the Twins who were last series winners as well as part of the Fans team this year. They are such a great time, have really great ideas and execute them very well. After our flash back post today featuring an interview I did with the twins, will be all about what they have been up to after turning in their police badges and embracing their newly developed creative sides. 

Have you seen the interview that I did with the Twins last year? Well if you haven't seen it yet, here it is! 

1. First of all a big congratulations and great effort! Looking back on the experience that you have just had, if you could give yourself some advice or warning before starting this challenge, would would it be? To align yourselves with reliable and experienced tradesman (which made such a difference as our amazing tradies were able to turn our visions into a reality.) 2. You both developed such great design style and skill. Week to week what inspired you design wise and helped you make certain style choices to create the overall look? I think once we established that we wanted the apartment to have a natural, earthy feel, it became a lot easier for us to make the right styling choices. In every room we designed, we aimed to create a point of interest such as including timber features, using different textured wallpaper like concrete and grass cloth, the inclusion of a herb garden, plus a green wall and rendered wall. It was really important that each room flowed into the other and that all the rooms didn't compete with one another. 3. It would be so tough making such important design and space decisions very quickly, I know first hand the questioning and doubt you can feel once you make a decision or trying to make sure it is the right one. How did you both work on not doubting the design choices you made and finishes you picked? We literally had one night to come up with the design for the entire room. After we had finished judging at Scotty's warehouse and found out what room was being revealed the next week, Lysandra and I would go home that night (after being awake for 48hr + ) and have to come up with a design for whatever room was being revealed next. Our builder Shiran wanted a plan from us the next morning so he could get started that very day in order to have enough time to finish before the next reveal. To be honest I actually think it was a good thing that we had to make quick decisions because it forced us to go with our gut instinct and not second guess ourselves, because there just wasn't time to. 4. It is such a great achievement for you both especially in support of women in construction and design! Do you have an inspirational message for aspiring renovating, kitchen and bathroom queens? Do not be afraid to ask questions if you don't understand. The amount of times Lysandra and I would say to Shiran "But why can't you put that thingy there and then use that thing to hide it" etc..... Even though we didn't understand a lot of the terminology or tools, we asked questions and would not stop until we understood how and why it worked. Don't be rushed into making important decisions and don't settle for the first thing you see. Research and shop around before you make your mind up on a product. Just remember, you don't have to spend a fortune on something to make a room look amazing. Shop smart and save your money for the important key features.

5. The fast paced environment and the competition does get the better of you. How did you both work on keeping your motivation and moral high?

It was extremely hard towards the end. Motivation and morale were at an all time low, but we had to keep reminding ourselves why we were there and that we hadn't come this far and been away from our boys for as long as we had, just to give up. We had an end goal in mind and we never lost sight of that. We were there to win and we played the game to the very last second.

It has a very different, relaxed, heartfelt and very inspiring vibe that many of us love! So you can imagine my extreme excitement when I was featured in Issue 7... such a dream come true to say the least.

It is a great resource if you run your own business or thinking about it. It is also a great pick me up on those difficult days when you are really trying to figure out if what you are doing is right. WARRIOR WEDNESDAY : CHANNEL CREATIVITY

Whenever you are looking for inspiration to get the creative juices flowing, I always look to imagery and magazines, but most importantly, I often need to get myself into a zone and look within to let my creativity flow. It is really important for all of us to connect with that creativity that is hidden within us as much as possible, it just allows you to escape a little of the rat race many of us are caught up in daily. Getting creative wether it is through DIY projects, renovating, art, writing or playing music, it can really speak to your soul ( sorry to be cheesy ) but it is true and it is always a huge question many people struggle with... how to channel that creativity? Or live and work in the creative field? How do you succeed being creative? Well, the answers are below.


Decoration + Design trade fair started in Sydney today ( which I will be attending tomorrow) and one of the headlining interior designers giving lots of inspiration and talks during the fair is Shannon Fricke . She is an expert at living a creative life personally and in her work. She is also very passionate about informing everyone on how to make your creativity work for you. It is so important that everyday we live our lives being our most authentic selves and if that means channeling your creativity and being true to yourself, then do it. To me that is more success than anything else, it is what I do everyday and despite the journey being difficult at times, the reward at being happy everyday and achieving your dreams is worth it.

INTERIORS ON A BUDGET

FEATURE FRIDAY: WHAT WE INTERIORS PEOPLE DO!

Yesterday I was completely inspired to share this with you and all because of Darren Palmer. Yes, you all know who he is, Block Judge, regular all round nice guy who always favours my tweets... which I really appreciate by the way and to top it off a great Australian Interior Designer. He shared with the world something that really inspired him, which in turn inspired me to write this post today.

Often it isn't very well understood what Interior Designers actually do with space and I often find myself saying that I am an Interior Architect ( All my girlfriends do it too ) because otherwise it just gets very confusing and we often get called Interior Decorators. NOT that there is anything wrong with that... I love styling and I love decorating, it a huge part of the job and it is a lot of fun, but I didn't really go to University for ... lets just say a long time, work my absolute arse off, get slammed and stress just for style. There is so much construction content that we have to know and understand, as well as knowing how to organise space and inform how people inhabit that space. It is all about documentation, space planning, electrical plans, lighting, specifications, materials, style and then decoration. There is a hell of a lot of work that goes into it and that is not even talking about decoding the brief, coming up with the concept ( or program ), considering use of space, details AND the surrounding environment, sun, shadows, east west, north south... yes! It is all VERY important!

Which is why I often find that sometimes us Interior Designers are a little under valued because lines between Stylist and Designer are very blurred. We are stylists yes but even if it is just style or decoration it is never just easy or something that happens over night ( unless you are on The Block, but it still isn't easy ) which is why I wanted to share this today. Us Designers, Stylers and Decorators all have a very strong mutual respect for each other in our community and it is very important to realise that what we do is VERY hard work. We are not just finger pointers by any means... far out I HATE that term... and yes I have been called it and no I do not appreciate it. So let me just get the record straight... everyone should watch this very inspiring video that really captures what Interior Designers do as a job, especially the ones that have been doing it for a very long time and are good at it. When I watched this video I remembered why I decided to become an Interior Designer... and yes there are days where I think... why? Why did I pick this?!

WARRIOR WEDNESDAYS: GET YOUR GOOP ON

I have written about Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop before, but I had a feeling last week that is was perfect for today's explorations. It is a serious go to guide for everything, from design to style to food to wellness... and wellness is something that we are very passionate about here at JDZ. It is one of my main goals to combine the two together and always inhabit spaces that really make you feel good. As a designer we have total control on how a space makes you feel and we can control and inform on how to inhabit and experience that space too. It's all very complex beneath the surface... believe me, but that is what makes our job as designers a lot of fun!


Goop is a guide/ website that presents you with the positives in life, so naturally you can see exactly why I really like it and think you all should get into it too. Goop has a weekly journal that is released to it's subscribers that embodies a lot more information and resources that is shown on the website.
Recently on the "see" part of the blog they had featured the steps in creating a beautiful and inspiring guest apartment. I really liked how they simply explained the process and showed the development of the initial stages of developing the concept to final stage of bringing it to life. Making a space function as well as feel good is a challenge and what I really like about this design process is that Goop demonstrates how some attention to detail and planning can really make some serious positive changes to an environment. These changes will not only change the space but how the space is perceived, used and inhabited. There is no doubt, the guest who stays in the newly styled apartment won't love it, feel comfortable and have a positive experience.

FEATURE FRIDAY: THE SOCIAL SCENE

One of the most important parts about being in Interiors is being in the know with trends and all the very important events. The events season is being kicked off this year by Decoration + Design at the beginning of February this year with many more to continue. They are strictly trade only events but they are so much fun and a great way to surround yourself in all the information and products your brain can absorb.

WHAT IS YOUR INTERIOR RESOLUTION?

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all my lovely loyal readers or whoever may stumble across my little blog. It is something that I am very proud of and cannot wait to develop more and more over the next year. Without all of your support and stopping by, it wouldn't be at the level it already is in such a short time!

New Year is that special time of year where we really kind of get a fresh start, start all over again and begin on a new note. It is customary to develop goals or New Year Resolutions for what you want to achieve or set your mind to in the New Year. I want to ask you all though, do you have an Interior New Year Resolution? What do you want to achieve in your space? Do you have big plans for a renovation? Have you just brought a house? I would love to hear what they are! Even if it is just about making it a healthier cleaner environment, or to create sustainable living, they are all great goals!

THE MIRACLE OF CHRISTMAS

I AM BACK!! I know, I know... where the hell have I been? I kinda dropped the ball a little last week in the blogging world as I was completely snowed under in plans, paper work, photoshopping, concept images ....and the list goes on and on and on. I hope you can all forgive me and join me in getting ready for Christmas. There is almost one week to go and there are so many different events on and it is really important to get into the festive spirit and decorate your home in celebration. Today I wanted to share with you some Christmas inspiration- part of my count down towards the big day. Later today, I will also be sharing some behind the scenes pics at a very special event on the weekend, that I helped inspire and directed to bring together! 

To me Christmas is about family, friends, dinners, lunches, lots of food, decorations and being grateful for all that we have! I have been so busy lately, I haven't had a chance to get into the Christmas spirit and really get some inspiration to get started and get decorating.
